Its the little moments in life that matters

IT was a glum early morning when I was awaken by the sound of chutney being grounded with a pestle in the kitchen downstairs. Regardless of the distance of my room from the kitchen, I’m still able to recall the harsh thud that the pestle made. Woken up this disturbed, I knew I wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep and I pushed myself up and made my way towards the bathroom and finished my morning routine that took me around fifteen minutes or so.

I walked downstairs with a History textbook in hand to study for my final ‘final exam’. I would be done with 9th grade and commence with the rigorous preparation for 10th grade that would begin soon after my finals. I studied whilst having breakfast and recited the sentences with a mouthful of dosa. My mom was a little annoyed, but since I was studying, she didn’t try to retort.  I sat on the dining table and studied till noon though I did own a study table upstairs. But then, my mom came up with this bizarre suggestion, “Lets get a puppy”. I was dumbstruck. My mom has an obsessive compulsive personality disorder when it comes to keeping her surroundings clean. Though she doesn’t mind or probably does like pets, she’d rather keep the house clean than have a pet. I’ve fought with her  several times on the same topic because I’d been wishing to own a dog for a long time. Nevertheless, I finally spoke up and instead of going ‘YES, DEFINITELY YES’, I questioned her by saying ‘why!’. She giggled at my astonishment and told me that she had been feeling guilty for a while about our previous fight on the matter of getting a dog and decided to overcome her doubts and make me happy. I was immensely happy, and before she could change her mind about it, I suggested we look for one and bring him home right away.

Forgetting that my final exam was on the next day, I went to my cousin’s place who happened to have a hyperactive labrador puppy. Perfect…the perfect end to the best day of my life! I brought Spike home and he slept on my lap that night whilst I sat on the floor trying my best to study for that damn history exam.
