The Malai Peda

The Malai Peda

As I greedily took a bite into the malai peda, sheer ecstasy engulfed my entire being. ” Ek aur ma,” I pleaded, still reeling from the pleasure and the delight. But just when she was about to hand me another one, papa came around the table, and slapped a thin fragile credit card bill on it.

With eyes as unreadable as a blind man’s, he asks, ” 5000 rupees? You spend 5000 bucks on food in just a month?!” I sheepishly nod and pray to the gods for some meteorite to fall on top of the house so that I could escape the wrath of the furious dragon who looked at me like I was some kind of an idiot. With one swift move, he swept the peda box off the table and into the fridge, forever forbidding me to even go near it.

Disheartened, I almost felt as if I was thirsty for days, and someone took the last sip of water that was available. Soon thereafter, nightfall knocked on the door and also knocked me into a sad slumber.

Sometime around midnight, I heard certain footsteps near my bedroom door. Terrified, I tightly wrapped myself in my bed sheet. Slowly lifting the bed sheet off my head, Ma said, ” Here beta, have another one”, and offered me a malai peda. Joyfully, I delved into the sweet savoury feeling the peda seduced me with. Finally.
