Dear Best Friend

Dear Best Friend

We met…
Yes, we finally met!
Not over a cup of tea
or a cup of coffee,
But of old memories,
a treasury. Ah!
Those school days…
Uniforms monotone
and those two plaits.
Those standing in lines
during assemblies,
Hushing giggles and
Nudging elbows,
And remember once
You fell and how?
That sharing of food,
Bringing for the other,
what tastebuds felt good.
That sharing of notes,
books and stationary,
Spoiling and hiding stuff
Or oft-times not returning.
Followed then we, one
And only one philosophy;
What’s yours is mine
and what’s mine yours,
Knew not then, we’ll be
Distanced for years long.
Distanced physically but
Emotionally ever strong.
In memories and dreams
still, we plan class bunks.
To linger secretly on stairs
And discuss, life problems.
Come free periods and
we played dumb charades.
Much awaited annually
were sports day parades.
Nothing parallels, in
competitions, our team work.
Or, those deadly cat-fights,
Forgetting and making up.
Come boring lectures
and we started to scribble,
How many times have we
Escaped being betrayed
By our irrepressible giggles.
Those hidden calls
on landlines, planning
pranks or birthday surprise.
Unplanned, dropping by
To each other’s homes,
And acting innocent,
For other’s mom.
Happy and carefree faces
ours, sung out loud
Our favourite songs
In recesses or
while lectures went on.
Singing and dancing thus,
Alas, we grew up. Time
Came, when from school
had we to pack up!
Miss those corridors,
teachers, canteens, class
rooms, grounds, stairs,
windows and red bricks
however much we may.
To chase our dreams, we
Had to go separate ways.
Changed may be our
Mode of talking everyday,
Best friends were we,
still are, and will always be!
As this teary-eyed
afternoon weaves on,
Come on friend, let’s
Lock up this suitcase of
Nostalgia and memories gold;
It’s time we move on,
And new memories mould.
