Hovering over the top of the clock tower with Gwen with her, the Green Goblin was in a very bad mood.
“Harry, this is between you and me. You wanna fight? Fight with me. Let her go!” The Spiderman shrieked.
“Right!” And he dropped her down.
Spiderman dived in the air and caught her, falling down inside the tower, only to find a fist-sized bomb falling beside them. They fell again, but Peter Parker, a.k.a Spiderman won’t let her go. He gave her a safe place and started fighting with the monster. Perplexed with the agility of Peter, the goblin relatively fell short and fell down, losing his flying gadget. It feel right over Gwen, and though she ducked the whole stand was broken and she fell.
Spidey caught her again with his web and was pulling her up. But how would that be so easy, given the monster Harry had become! He rushed and caught Peter’s neck from behind and made him fall on the gear he was sitting. He kicked Peter’s hand and with the rotation of the gears, the web going down to Gwen was just about to get broken.
Peter knew that. Ducking the blows of Harry, he tied his hand and his head too, and left him to die with the gears. Right before the web was to be broken by the giant gear, Peter stopped it with all his might. For a few seconds only. The axle of the gear broke, causing the Goblin to fall aside lifelessly, and with this, fell Gwen Stacy.
With a gasp, Gwen fell. The tears in her eyes left from the corners. There was something that told her that this was the end. She saw him diving down towards her but she knew he won’t be able to make it. She batted her eyelashes and went in a flashback where Peter Parker: this Peter Parker used to get beaten by Flash. The day when the lean nerd asked her out, almost making her blush. How he sneaked into the giant Osborn laboratory. She had fallen for him way before he even knew.
Someone has to sacrifice. Peter’s parents did, so that the secrets might not get revealed to the evil. Her own father, Captain Stacy died so that the world might be saved. Today she was dying. So what? So many people die every day, leaving memories behind them. “Will I be remembered?” She looked at Spiderman. “Do you care for me, Peter?” Peter shot his web towards her.
But it was late. She was fascinated how her brain was working so fast. “Will it reach me? How much time do I have?” But in the next moment she knew she won’t survive. She closed her eyes. “Who are you? Just a common mortal being. Be thankful you’re dying while doing a good cause.” She let out a deep breath and one more tear flew from her eyes, perhaps to bid goodbye to this world. Just as she was going to hit the ground, she felt some cord pulling her waist but in the very next split second her head hit the earth.
Silence. Perfect silence as something escaped from the mouth of Gwen Stacy. She hung lifelessly on the cord. Spidey dived down only to find his world shattered. A cool breeze went past him when he held her in his arms and hugged.
Perhaps a dead Gwen Stacy was looking at him from somewhere.
